We looked for places in Budapest where we can satisfy not only our hunger but also our longing for nostalgia.
The term "comfort food" means something different to every nation, but for us Hungarians, it most often signifies the atmosphere of family lunches, steaming meat soup, or the favorite canteen dishes of our childhood. These are the recipes we learned from our parents and grandparents, and to which countless personal stories are attached.
However, we might not always have the time to prepare these dishes ourselves. That is when a reliable Hungarian restaurant comes in handy, where we can find domestic flavors even during the rushing workdays.
In this selection, you will find profiles of SIMALIBA Belvárosi Csárda, Séf Asztala, Normafa Síház Étterem, Gundel Étterem, Mákos Guba Étterem, Fakanál Étterem, and Róma Ételbár.
Included are elegant restaurants perfect for large family gatherings, as well as friendly units where you can pop in anytime during a lunch break for a bowl of warm food. What they have in common is that their atmosphere pulls you in immediately, and their flavors are exactly like the ones we are used to at home.
SIMALIBA Downtown Inn
Located on Piarista Street, SIMALIBA is a true gap-filling spot in the city center. While many restaurants in the area cater specifically to tourists, they have managed to create a modern csárda that provides an authentic and high-quality experience for Hungarian families as well. They have successfully translated the classic tavern atmosphere into today's environment without frills, resulting in an interior that is both authentic and tasteful.
The kitchen’s foundation is honest Hungarian gastronomy, where dishes made from the namesake goose (liba) play a prominent role, such as crispy goose leg with braised cabbage.
The menu is built on reliable classics like goulash soup, Hortobágy-style pancakes, or túrós csusza (cottage cheese pasta). The portions here are truly substantial, ensuring no one leaves the table hungry. The restaurant's quality is also recognized professionally, having been awarded by the prestigious Gault&Millau guide.
During the Easter period, they await guests with a special seasonal selection to bring festive flavors to the table. At these times, they evoke the atmosphere with dishes like meat soup with poached eggs and fresh spring wild garlic, or creamy lamb shank with morel mushroom ragout and parsley rice. The meal is concluded with a true spring dessert: Easter strudel filled with cottage cheese and strawberries. SIMALIBA is the perfect choice if you long for reliable, home-style flavors in the heart of the city center.

Séf Asztala
One of the friendliest spots on Kossuth Square is Séf Asztala, located directly next to the Parliament. One of the restaurant's biggest draws is the unique panorama enjoyed while sitting on the terrace: alongside the view of the Parliament, accompanied by a good coffee or a bowl of home-style food, one can linger for many minutes. The specialty of the place lies in its duality: the interior is colorful, cheerful, and modern, while the concept offers a much more relaxed, direct experience instead of the constraints of white tablecloths. Thanks to the counter service, the kitchen moves quickly, making it an ideal choice for a quick, quality lunch in the middle of a workday, but it also provides a perfect setting for a more leisurely meal.
The menu offers solutions for every part of the day, from hearty breakfasts to filling daytime dishes and a special lángos selection.
It is worth highlighting the latter, as besides the classic cheese-and-sour-cream version, they experiment with exciting toppings like the bacon-sheep cheese-red onion combination. Although international flavors appear due to the location, the emphasis is on properly prepared Hungarian dishes. Here, we do not get "new wave" reinterpretations, but comfort food made from real, quality ingredients: a bowl of steaming goulash, golden-brown schnitzel, or a filling plate of layered potatoes (rakott burgonya).
In terms of desserts, they also evoke childhood memories with reliable favorites like curd dumplings (túrógombóc) or nudli. Séf Asztala does not want to be more than what it is: a steady point in the middle of the city where, even during rushing workdays, we can get that comforting feeling that a bowl of "proper" warm food provides.

Normafa Síház Restaurant
For Budapest residents, Normafa is much more than just a hiking spot: it is a refuge above the city, where a short walk is equivalent to a mini vacation. The Normafa Síház building complex standing at the center of the area has undergone a stunning renewal. During the renovation, they combined the past with the present in an exemplary manner: alongside maintaining the old, prestigious part, the house was expanded with a new, light, wooden forest pavilion. This contemporary structure evokes Nordic modernity, and with its massive glass walls, it blends among the trees as if the restaurant's interior were an organic continuation of the forest. This clean yet nature-close central part has become exactly the meeting point the area has long needed.
The kitchen is led by Krisztián Dózsa, whose concept is built around quality comfort food.
Although dishes like juicy chicken paprikás, the perfect Wiener Schnitzel, or home-style tomato cabbage evoke childhood memories, it is not just simple nostalgia here. The chef refreshes classics with conscious proportions, modern technology, and a fine, contemporary interpretation.
This approach allows high-quality, clean Neapolitan pizzas to find a place on the menu alongside familiar flavors.
The Síház has thus become a gastronomic destination for which it is worth climbing the hill in its own right. The wonderful panorama and fresh forest air provide a perfect backdrop for a hearty Sunday lunch or a long, conversational dinner. This is the place where traditional hospitality meets today's expectations, all in one of Budapest's most iconic nature-close environments.

Gundel Restaurant
There are flavors that every Hungarian recognizes immediately: the golden meat soup, the silky sauce of chicken paprikás, or the chocolate layers of somlói galuska. The Gundel kitchen builds exactly on this elemental experience. According to the restaurant's creed, these dishes are not just food—they represent home and care. During rushing workdays, when we don't have time to stand in the kitchen for hours, we can find that peace and those childhood flavors that everyone has loved in the same way for generations in the heart of the City Park (Városliget).
The "Gundel National 11" selection on the menu presents the deepest common points of Hungarian gastronomy.
A plate of rich Újházi chicken soup or chicken paprikás served with freshly made dumplings immediately brings back the atmosphere of leisurely family meals. Chefs András Wolf and Róbert Vérten created the selection so that traditional recipes are served fresh and at a modern standard, preserving the classic character of the Wiener Schnitzel or Palóc soup. Here, we do not get something "special," but the feeling that the taste of home lies in every bite.
It is important to know that these iconic dishes are the cornerstones of the menu, so they can be chosen on any day. Parallel to this, Gundel's Sunday family lunch is a separate concept with its own set menu, available every Sunday between 11:30 and 16:00. This fixed offer, with shared fried chicken and homemade apple strudel, specifically awaits those who want to give the weekend lunch its due with several generations together in a prestigious environment accompanied by live music.

Mákos Guba Restaurant
Mákos Guba Étterem awaits those looking for the home-style flavors of Hungarian cuisine in a modern, bistro environment on both banks of the Danube, in both Buda and Pest. Whether it is the Krisztina Boulevard unit or the one next to the Basilica, the name is a guarantee for a friendly atmosphere and filling, demandingly presented dishes.
Although the two menus hold unique specialties, their concept is common: they bring traditional recipes to life with quality ingredients and in a modern, clean form.
The character of the two locations offers different experiences depending on the occasion. The unit located in the neighborhood of the Buda Castle is a meeting of historical environment and modern gastronomy. It is an ideal choice if someone wants to escape the city noise a bit for a peaceful lunch or a hearty menu on weekdays. In contrast, the restaurant located in the immediate vicinity of St. Stephen's Basilica brings an elegant downtown lifestyle, which is a perfect backdrop for a romantic dinner or a stylish meeting after work. The atmosphere is completed by live music on both sides: in Buda on Friday and Saturday at dinner time, as well as Sunday at lunchtime, while in Pest from Thursday to Saturday starting at 19:00.
The foundations of the menus are the same everywhere: steaming goulash soup, Hortobágy-style meat pancakes, or the Hungarian appetizer are constant favorites. Among the main courses, the duck leg with braised cabbage and apple mashed potatoes stands out, evoking exactly that home Sunday lunch experience for which it is worth visiting. The visit is crowned at both locations by the namesake mákos guba (poppy seed bread pudding), which is served in a modern presentation but with the original, authentic flavor world, perfectly summarizing the restaurant's philosophy.

Fakanál Restaurant
In the pulsating whirlwind of the Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok), located on the gallery, Fakanál Étterem has been one of the most important bastions of traditional Hungarian hospitality for decades. This place is much more than a market eatery: it is one of the capital's true gastronomic ambassadors, where domestic and foreign guests alike can experience Hungarian cuisine in its purest form. The essence of the concept is simplicity and authenticity: here, food, folk music, and shared memories meet in an environment that brings the peace of family kitchens within the setting of one of the most beautiful European market halls.
The kitchen's philosophy is not about reinterpretation or experimentation, but about respect for traditions. Every dish is prepared exactly as we have loved it for generations.
Goulash soup served richly, pork stew with dumplings, tender roasted knuckle, or crispy fried sausages are served at the counter in honest, hearty versions. The selection is completed by homemade cakes, pies, and fresh, crispy strudels. Thanks to the self-service system, guests can freely choose from the freshly prepared selection, making Fakanál an ideal choice for a quick yet quality and filling lunch.
The experience is completed by the cozy interior, which evokes the warmth of a country house with its stove (sparhelt), kitchen towels hanging from the drying rack (fregoli), and colorful chairs. The atmosphere becomes truly complete in the afternoons, when between 12:00 and 15:00, virtuoso live Gypsy music accompanies the meal, creating that unmistakable atmosphere that often makes visitors hum the melodies together even if they are strangers. Fakanál is a steady point in the city where the rush stops, and every bite contains humility toward domestic flavors.

Róma Ételbár
Located on Csalogány Street in Buda, Róma Ételbár is a household name in the capital's gastronomy. Its history stretches back decades: after the retirement of the legendary founder, Aunt Cica (Cica néni), in 2018, the place closed for a while, then reopened in 2020, respecting traditions but renewed. Since then, Róma's success has been unbroken; in fact, it has become a true place of pilgrimage among locals and those coming from distant points of the city. This is a place where there are no unnecessary frills, just honest, home-style flavors and a special environment where everyone feels at home.
The backbone of the menu rests on steady points, and although they fine-tune the selection on Fridays (the current menu is always posted on their Facebook page), the most important classics are almost immovable. I don't believe there is a day when we wouldn't find a steaming meat soup, some kind of fried chicken, or the crowd-favorite tomato meatballs with boiled potatoes on the menu. Among the desserts, the gigantic curd dumpling (túrógombóc) is also a constant player.
However, it is important to know that Róma is a true "lunch spot": they are open between 11:00 and 16:00, and since they are extremely popular, it is worth taking a seat on the cozy terrace early, even before noon.
When we talk about portions, at Róma, a LARGE portion really means what you think. Here, a person does not just get full, but faces a serious challenge: even the trio of a cup of soup, a main course, and a dessert tests the most determined. The presentation and quality of the food go far beyond the standard level of typical snack bars, while the prices remain specifically modest even compared to the Buda location. Róma Ételbár is a mandatory stop that everyone must try at least once – but anyone who has tasted its atmosphere will become a regular guest anyway.
Address: 1015 Budapest, Csalogány utca 20.
